Technical Analysis

The method of evaluating a position by analyzing statistics generated by market activity, such as past prices and volume. Technical analysts do not attempt to measure a security’s intrinsic (real) value, but instead use charts and other tools to identify patterns that can suggest future activity.

Trend

The direction of market which has been established with the influence of several different factors.

Tick
Shortest interval used in stock trading and forex charting. Equivalent to pips. A ticker or tick chart, table or graph, shows current and/or recent history of a currency’s movement. Other charts show change over longer periods: 1, 5, 10, 15 minutes, hours, days weeks, months or years.

Unrealized Profit/Loss

A profit or a loss on non-closed positions.

Useable Margin

The amount of available funds in an investment account above the actual client equity that may be used for trading.

UTM

The predecessor to Universal Market Trader, the Ultimate Trading Machine was a proprietary stocks and forex trading system from NetPicks, on sale until April 2007 and was completely sold out. The replacement UMT (see above) is far more flexible and advanced.

Volatility

A statistical measure of the number of price changes for a given currency pair in a given period of time.

Whipsaw slang for a condition of a highly volatile market where a sharp price movement is quickly followed by a sharp reversal.

XAG  and XAU are ISO codes. These are quoted as one ounce (Oz.) against the US dollar and other currencies, and can be traded in pairs like XAU/USD, XAG/GBP etc. The origin is from the Latin words and chemical symbols for these precious metals; silver is argentum (Ag), gold aurum (Au); also platinum XPT and palladium XPD.
